Making bets on Kentucky Derby Day

Today is Pie's 6th birthday!!!  Here we are on the trail yesterday morning.  I have been riding every single day first thing in the morning and then I work on a huge project...

We are having a Kentucky Derby - Pie-Pie's-Birthday - plant a tree seedling picnic today!  I can't believe it is finally here and it might be sunny!  Hooray!

I got 350 (!) seedlings from the state and I have been preparing our fields with paths and pre-dug holes for the little ones and older guests. I woke up today at 5 am without an alarm.  That isn't like me!

My only rule with this project was that I rode every day before I started work on the seedling preparations. Even today, I might sneak in a ride.  It took me 44 years to get my priorities right - ride, groom, graze, first - do the rest of life after.  It is the only way to be happy and keep sane!

Happy Kentucky Derby day.  Love up your ponies.  I will have photos of our event and finally get back to reading all the blogs next week!

  5. What an awesomely wonderful idea! I have a funny story coming about recouping 20 feet in our orchard. A post-hole digger machine has been our best friend these past 2 weekends. I wonder if they would help with tree planting..? Anyway, Happy Birthday to a young Pie and I hope it all went well! :-)

  6. Happy Birthday Pie! Rogo just turned six too.
I hope you had a really fun day Juliette. Sounds great. I love your priorities. It took me a long time to get mine straight too, but now the rest of my day gets planned around horse time :)

  7. That sounds like one of the best parties I've ever heard of! And Pie's birthday too? What a happy day! I wonder if you won any bets for the derby! I didn't bet! I just wonder if they have to desensitize the winner to that giant cloak of roses? Happy Birthday, dear sweet Pie.

  8. Oh Pie Pie is still such a babykins!!! Happy bday sweet boy! :)
I definitely have a better day if I can ride/pony time first, but it's quite difficult to do somedays.

  10. Juliette, What a wonderful party idea! I hope you had a great time. And happy birthday to Pie also - good boy - extra carrots and treats for him! I'm like you; on the weekends, my time is totally for Buckshot and horses, nothing else (sadly I have to work in an office Monday thru Friday, to pay for sweet Buckshot!) so I understand your priorities!!
